Seikatsu Club Launches Seikatsu Club Energy Co. Ltd. for the Collective Purchase of Environmentally-friendly Electricity

For many years, Seikatsu Club Consumers Co-operative has been working for a collective purchase movement based on the principle of autonomous control over the "food" we consume. We went on to expand our field of autonomous activities to include "care", such as in kyosai (mutual assistance), and elderly and child care needed in local communities. Now we have chosen to work on autonomous control over "energy" because it is essential for our members’ lives.

We are working to create local communities which are self-sufficient in food, energy and care because these are essential elements for our lives. On October 24, 2014, after Seikatsu Clubs in different parts of Japan decided to make investments, the Seikatsu Club Energy Co. Ltd. was launched based on our energy policy, which has the three pillars of “we try to reduce the amount of energy we use”, “generate it ourselves”, and “use the energy we generate ourselves”. The main businesses of the company include electricity distribution, promoting renewable energy, developing new sources of electricity, and promoting energy conservation. Supply and demand will be adjusted through a partnership with Summit Energy Co. Ltd., which has been working with four Seikatsu Clubs near Tokyo. We intend to promote renewable energy and develop its sources based on our principle of teikei (direct relations with producers). We aim at building sustainable communities based on our partnership with producers, which we have already developed by working for our control over "food".

In April 2015, we will start from electricity distribution to business entities eligible for high-voltage power service, since this is already a deregulated area. As we envision further deregulation of the electricity distribution system, we aim at distributing electricity to our members' households. Through the development of this project, we will work to transform our society into one that is based on renewable energy.

Summit Energy Co. Ltd.
Summit Energy Co. Ltd. is a power producer and supplier (PPS) to which four Seikatsu Clubs in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba) sell electricity generated by the Seikatsu Club Wind Power Plant, which was built by these Seikatsu Clubs. It distributes electricity to the facilities of the Seikatsu Club which are eligible for high-voltage power service.
